Wisconsin Tennis Association presents 2009 USTA Jr. Team Tennis

Description:
USTA Jr. Team Tennis is the largest junior recreational tennis league in the USA with over 100,000 participants nation-wide.  USTA Jr. Team Tennis is often compared to Little League Baseball, as the program offers children the opportunity to develop their individual and team tennis skills in a fun, yet competitive atmosphere.

Minimum requirements:
• Name league:  USTA Jr. Team Tennis
• 2 teams in a division, three boys and three girls minimum per team (ideal team is ten)
• 6-8 week league session, 1 practice and 1 match per week
• All participants must be current USTA Members which is $18.00 per year.  To join or renew  go to www.usta.com/membership
• player registration ($3.00 tennislink fee per player), match schedules, and results must be recorded in tennislink for all leagues
• all participants must be age eligible for each age division through aug. 31, 2009
• new for 2009!  usta proudly presents the new nike dri-fit uniform for $11.50.  the wisconsin tennis association is offering a $6.00 rebate for the purchase of the uniform.  click here for the wta rebate form and instructions.


formats:
local leagues may use any format that fits the characteristics of the league.  below are a few recommended formats:

1. one boys’ singles, one girls’ singles, one boys’ doubles, one girls’ doubles, and two mixed doubles matches.  all games count towards overall team score.
2. a six game no-add pro set is common, or a timed match
3. quickstart used for beginner leagues in the ten, and eight-and-under divisions.  it is a modified team tennis format that gets players playing tennis on a scaled down court

levels of play:
usta jr. team tennis offers the following levels based on age and national tennis rating program) ntrp rating:

beginner 10, 12, 14, 18 and under  2.5 ntrp and below
intermediate 10, 12, 14, 18 and under 3.0 ntrp and below
advanced 12, 14, 18 and under  3.5 ntrp and above
• ntrp guidelines (click here for NTRP level descriptions)

Championship opportunities:
1. The Teams that win the local league advances to the District Championship
2. The Teams that win the District Championship advance to the Sectional Championship
3. The Teams that win Sectionals advance to Nationals
4. Wildcards are typically offered to second place teams

Championship dates:

USTA/Midwest Section Jr. Team Tennis All-Star Championship-May 1-3, 2009
-All-star teams from leagues participating in Fall, Winter, or Spring Leagues.
-Each local league creates teams based upon their own criteria.
-Located in Ft. Wayne, IN
-Registration Deadline is April 15, 2009

USTA Wisconsin District Jr. Team Tennis Championship-July 24-26, 2009
-Located at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, WI
-Registration Deadline is July 17, 2009
-Local league tournament winner to advance to Sectional Championship

USTA/Midwest Section Jr. Team Tennis Sectional Championships-Aug. 7-9, 2009
-Local league teams must qualify through Wisconsin District Championship
-Located in Indianapolis, IN
-Registration Deadline is August 1, 2009

Additional Rules
• Coaches and parents must use NTRP Ratings as a guideline to enter a division.  Players may not have more than 200 year-end Midwest Ranking Points to participate at the Intermediate Level
• For a team to play in an advanced league, at least four players must be above 3.0 using the NTRP rating system.
• All participants in the USTA Jr. Team Championships (14 and 18 and Under Divisions) must have participated in three local league matches on two separate days, recorded in TennisLink on the same team in the same Championship season.

Steps to a Successful Program:
1. Local League Coordinator-communicates program to local area
2. Point person at local tennis facilities, schools or Park and Rec. Departments
3. Parents involvement - volunteer to be Team Captains or other duties
4. Support of the community tennis association
