USTA Adopt-A-Court

Funding Helps Renovate and Refurbish 194 Tennis Courts in 34 Communities
Total Grants for 2003 Nears $200,000

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., May 5, 2003 - The USTA today announced that it will provide a grant to renovate and refurbish two tennis courts at Ashland Elks Lodge BPOE #137 in Ashland, Wisc. through its Adopt-a-Court program. In total, the USTA will provide $152,000 in grants to upgrade 194 tennis courts at facilities in 34 communities around the country. The USTA Adopt-a-Court program, an offshoot of the USTA Technical Committee, is a cooperative program administered by the USTA, its Sections, Districts and Community Tennis Associations that provides grants specifically for the repair or upgrade of public tennis facilities. The USTA Adopt-a-Court program is sponsored by Deco Systems, one of the nation's top tennis court surfacing companies.

"Facilitating access to usable public tennis courts is central to the USTA's mission to promote and develop the growth of tennis," said Lee Hamilton, Executive Director, USTA. "The Adopt-a-Court program provides funding to breathe life into the courts at Ashland Elks Lodge BPOE #137, giving current and future players of Ashland a place to play."

The 34 facilities receiving funding are listed on the attached page. The USTA Adopt-a-Court program has granted $196,000 to upgrade 231 courts at 46 facilities this year. These 46 facilities are located in 13 of the USTA's 17 regional sections.

In its four years of existence, the USTA Adopt-a-Court program has awarded funding to 72 tennis facilities to refurbish courts. In 2003, the USTA Adopt-A-Court program seeks to provide grants to over 100 tennis facilities.

The United States Tennis Association is the national governing body for the sport of tennis in the United States and is a non-profit organization with more than 670,000 members.  It owns and operates the US Open and selects the teams that compete in Davis Cup, Fed Cup and the Olympic and Paralympic Games.  It invests all its resources to promote and develop the growth of tennis, from the grass roots to the professional levels.
