City of Baraboo Receives USTA Grant

July 15, 2003 01:10 AM

USTA Awards $250,000 to 50 Park & Recreation Agencies

Across the Country for Community Tennis Programs

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., July 2, 2003 – The USTA today announced that it has partnered with the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) to award $250,000 in grants to 50 community parks across the nation. City of Baraboo Parks and Recreation Department was one of 50 park and recreation agencies selected from over 275 applications to receive a $5,000 grant for hiring a certified tennis professional to execute USA Tennis programs this summer.

In order to ensure success of the program, Tennis in the Parks grant recipients will hire a tennis professional certified by either the PTR or USPTA; establish a USA Team Tennis youth program with a goal of attracting more than 200 kids; establish a USA Team Tennis adult program with a goal of attracting more than 50 adults; offer other group instruction or playing opportunities to increase participation at the community park; recruit and introduce new players to the sport of tennis.

“The Tennis in the Parks program represents a marriage of the tennis industry – the USTA, NRPA, USPTA and PTR have united to grow the game,” said Kurt Kamperman, Chief Executive, Community Tennis, USTA. “All of our organizations are working together to make tennis more accessible to people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds in community parks throughout the country.”

“Elevating the caliber of tennis instruction is the key to the Tennis in the Parks program,” said Kathy J. Spangler, CPRP, Marketing Director, NRPA. “The certified tennis professionals will ensure that kids and adults are properly trained in a fun and safe environment.”

The National Recreation and Park Association is a nonprofit professional and citizen association dedicated to advancing parks, recreation and environmental conservation efforts that enhance the quality of life for all people.  Headquartered in Ashburn, Virginia, NRPA supports the work of public, private, and non-profit recreation concerns in the areas of youth development, lifelong health, quality sports and environmental stewardship.

The USTA is the national governing body for the sport of tennis in the United States and is a not-for-profit organization with more than 670,000 members.  It owns and operates the US Open and selects the teams for the Davis Cup, Fed Cup, and the Olympic and Paralympic Games.  It invests 100% of its proceeds to promote and develop the growth of tennis, from the grass roots to the professional levels.  For more information on the USTA, log on to usta.com.
