City Recreation staff member invited to be a presenter

Rick Luther, Recreation Supervisor for the City of Baraboo Parks and Recreation Department has been invited to be part of a panel presentation at the United States Tennis Association-Community Tennis Development Workshop to be held in Atlanta, Georgia on February 10, 2007.

The CTDW is held annually at various locations around the country.  This three day Workshop is expected to attract nearly 700 Parks and Recreation and other professionals working to promote community tennis across the country.

Marcia Bach, Recreation and Parks Tennis Coordinator for the USTA who invited Luther
to be on the panel stated “I think it’s so important for the attendees to understand the dynamics of a small community.”  Bach also stated that Luther has been an integral part of the national “Tennis in the Parks” initiative for several years.  Bach and Luther have worked together on the Tennis in the Park Focus Group held at the offices of the National Recreation and Park Association in Ashburn, VA in November of 2004 and at the  CTDW in Destin, Florida in February of 2005.

Rick currently serves as the Wisconsin Tennis Association Recreation Committee Chair.  He and his committee have been instrumental in providing grants, over the past 17 years, of nearly $100,000.  If you need a grant, Rick Luther and the WTA Recreation Committee are the ones to contact.  All contact and grant information can be found on the WTA Official Website at www.wisconsin.usta.com  Just look for the Recreation Committee pages.

Baraboo Parks and Recreation Department Awarded $4,000 Middle School Tennis Grant

The Baraboo Parks and Recreation Department has been selected to receive a $4,000.00 Middle School Tennis Challenge Grant from the United States Tennis Association to support efforts to provide after school tennis programming for Middle Schools in the Baraboo area.  The Baraboo program which is completing the fifth year of play will be partnering with the Reedsburg, Sauk Prairie, and Wisconsin Dells Recreation programs to begin a Spring and Fall Interscholastic Tennis program for 2007.  The Reedsburg, Sauk Prairie and Wisconsin Dells programs will now be able to be offered for the very first time thanks to the grant award.

According to Marcia Bach, USTA Park and Recreation Tennis Coordinator, the USTA Tennis in the Parks and USTA School Tennis programs are excited to increase tennis playing opportunities for middle school children across the country.  USTA School Tennis Coordinator Karen Green adds that increasing middle school tennis programming has been identified as national priority for her department.  Bach also stated that the USTA is delighted to offer the grant in supporting the continued enhancement of tennis programming in Baraboo and the surrounding communities.

The grant was authored by Rick Luther, Recreation Supervisor for the City of Baraboo Parks and Recreation Department.  His efforts have produced approximately $24,000 in tennis facility, payroll, and program grants from the USTA, the USTA Midwest Section, and the Wisconsin Tennis Association over the past five years.  Luther has also written other grants in his role as President of the Baraboo Hills Community Tennis Association.
