In Memorium: Rexford Watson

January 27, 2004 04:05 AM

Rexford Watson was born in Edgerton, WI.  He played on the tennis team at Milton College.  He married Mary Mueller in 1935 and completed his law degree at UW-Madison in 1936.  Rex worked for Employer's Mutual Insurance Company of Wausau in Milwaukee for 30 years.  In 1965 he returned to Madison and worked for the State of Wisconsin Industrial Commission.

He retired early in 1973 to be able to devote more time to his great passion for tennis and Badger sports.  He will be greatly missed as a player, USTA official, and cheering spectator at Badger events for the past 75 years.  Over the years, Rex and his wife, Mary, were often seen behind a tournament desk for tournaments they helped organize.  Rex was the USTA referee when the National Intercollegiate Team Tennis Championships were first held in Madison.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Care, Inc. 5395 E. Cheryl Pkwwy, Madison 53711 or to the UW Foundation for men's or women's tennis.
