The Wisconsin Tennis Association Congratulates John Powless

The Wisconsin Tennis Association congratulates John Powless and the John Powless Tennis Center, Madison on tennis achievements in the Wisconsin Tennis Association, USTA Midwest Section and international recognition.

The International Tennis Federation has ranked John as the No. 1 tennis player in the world for players 75 and older. 

He won a tournament in Argentina last month as well as winning the 2009 Australian Senior Championships in Adelaide, South Australia in February.

In 2008, he won the Super-Seniors event in Turkey, the Mallorca Seniors Open in October and the United States Tennis Association’s Men’s 75-80 Grass Court Championships in New Jersey in September. He also won the national hard court, clay, grass and indoor doubles championships for his age class.

The John Powless Tennis Center received the prestigious USTA Midwest Section Member Organization of the Year Award at the USTA Midwest Section Spring Meeting, April 25 in Indianapolis, Indiana.  This award is presented annually to a USTA member organization in recognition of its service to the tennis community, service to its members through junior and adult programs, and its history of providing those services.

In servicing the community, the John Powless Tennis Center has hosted the Junior Badger State Games since the event started almost 20 years ago. The facility also provides free clinics to introduce young players to tennis, hosts the annual PTR training certification, and provides courts for high school team practices. John Powless Tennis Center is a registered Tennis Welcome Center.

The facility provides a variety of services for its members. It has supported USTA League tennis since the program’s inception in 1980. John Powless Tennis Center has hosted the USTA/Midwest Section Men’s Hard Court Championships for more than 10 years. The facility hosts various USTA League playoffs each year. Quarterly club parties are held at the club, and there is an annual Member Recognition Day.

The John Powless Tennis Center was also named the Wisconsin Tennis Association 2008 Member Organization of the Year Award.

The WTA extends its congratulations and deepest appreciation to John and the John Powless Tennis Center.
