Congratulations, Christy Etten, USTA Tennis Mom

May 4, 2010 03:43 AM

Christy Etten

For the last three years, Christy Etten has been focused on growing tennis across the state of Wisconsin and is featured as USTA Tennis Mom in celebration of Mother’s Day and Tennis Month.

Her own love of the game began when she played for her high school team in Neenah, Wisconsin. She came back to the game through her children, daughters Shannon and Hannah Jane. When their USTA Jr. Team Tennis team needed a leader, she volunteered as captain, and later became a USTA Jr. Team Tennis Local League Coordinator. She presently works as the Wisconsin District League Coordinator for USTA Jr. Team Tennis, and is an advocate for bringing tennis into the schools. Her children now play in USTA tournaments as well as USTA Jr. Team Tennis. Etten and her husband Rob enjoy playing in local USTA Leagues.

Previously, Etten worked at General Motors for 11 years in their Sales, Service, Marketing, Advertising and Training Departments. She later worked for a supplier to GM at Automatic Data Processing as an Account Executive and owned her own stationery business. Etten obtained a Bachelor’s degree from Purdue University in 1984.

Linda Freedman, Wisconsin Tennis Association Marketing Coordinator described why Christy is a great tennis mom:

"I can think of no greater example of a devoted tennis mom than Christy Etten. She has instilled her passion for tennis in her children and is the essence of love of family, lessons of sportsmanship, teamwork, dedication and encouragement,” Freedman said. “She has taught her daughters, Shannon and Hannah, the values, principals and ideals that embody athletic endeavors and life's achievements. Christy has supported her children in all their tennis and other athletic pursuits from lessons to competitions and participation in USTA Jr. Team Tennis.

“Beyond carpools and significant travel as Shannon has pursued tennis success, Christy has been Shannon's cheerleader and her inspiration,” she added. “When she received a sportsmanship award at an important USTA tournament, Christy was clearly proud of the deeper significance of her daughter's prestigious acknowledgement."

Eric Volcheff, WTA President shared Etten’s impact on the game in her local community:

“Christy has dedicated her passion and skill so that other youth can participate in tennis and also benefit from the health, fitness and fun of the sport,” he said. “She has been instrumental in bringing tennis into the PE curriculum of her children's school so that their classmates can participate, as well. As the Wisconsin Jr. Team Tennis District League Coordinator, Christy has grown tennis participation by 28 percent in just three years traveling and making contacts throughout the state to encourage parents to bring the sport to their children."

Nancy Massart, WTA, Executive Director shared why Christy is an inspirational tennis mom:

"Christy is the consummate tennis Mom and has shown the tennis community that passion for sport combined with dedication and love of family can reap rewards that are everlasting, as only a mother can."
