Betty H

Betty Hayward has been a dedicated volunteer for tennis in the Madison Area for over 20 years. Her many hours of volunteering include:

  • Working on beginning Leagues many years ago when the initial meetings were held and players names were drawn out of a hat to form teams. Being one of the first organizers of Senior Women's teams in Madison in the early '90s.
  • Coaching in the Madison Middle School after-school team tennis league, registering players for free tennis clinics provided by USTA Pathway grant money.
  • Serving on the Board of the Greater Madison Tennis Association.
  • Serving on the Board of the Badger Advantage Club, the Booster Club for Women's Tennis at UW-Madison. In this capacity, Betty has served coffee and donuts to tennis match attendees, has worked the tournament desk for Big Ten Championships and Rolex/ITA Tennis Tournaments.
  • Working and directing the Tournament Desk for the USTA/ITA National Indoor Team Championships which are held each February at Nielsen Tennis Stadium for the past 15 years. The top 16 teams in the country return each year and always say it is one of the best-run tournaments they attend. When teams from Stanford, Florida, Georgia, Arizona, etc. make their way to Madison each February, it shows that they appreciate the contributions of volunteers like Betty.
  • Playing tennis for the Wisconsin District at the Midwest Senior Team Championships in Lansing, Michigan. In early 2004, as the Wisconsin team was being recruited, it was noted that we did not have players for some of the women's top age divisions. Betty agreed to play in the '70s division and she and her doubles partner added many points to the Wisconsin total.
